Escape and Discovery

The Escape

The four of us have had enough. We have to get out of here. We are very connected to each other. Whatever one of us does, the others will go along with it. The noise is nearly unbearable. Screeching, screaming, and yelling out at us “Look at them! See that? They are so cute.” Every one wants to touch us, they are grabbing at us and pulling us down. The four of us don’t have to put up with that. We weren’t meant to be treated this way.

Look-no one is watching. They are all at a table, laughing and shoving things into their mouths. This is our chance. Let’s go! NOW! Take off!

Whew! We made it, and if we hide long enough, everyone will give up looking for us. Let’s just stay here for a while and enjoy the rest of our lives together.

The Discovery

The dog has to go out to do his business, as he does each morning at this time. I let him out of the house into the back yard. Then I went inside to make coffee.

As the dog was returning to the house, he began barking wildly. This was the Big Dog bark of a very small dog. A dog who felt very threatened and needed to show his most ferocious side. There had to be something very scary outside.

I went outdoors to check on him. He was at the side of the deck, madly barking toward the rocky area along the perimeter of the house. He was making a miniature Schnauzer-style point to the scary thing, trying to show where the threat was located, and attempting to protect me from the danger. I looked over the edge of the deck rather carefully, not sure what would be there.

I found them, hovering close to the house. They had obviously been traumatized, as one of them had lost its life in the process of making their way to the protection of our yard. The others had lost a bit of their luster, but appeared to be okay.

I can only wonder where they came from, and what sent them on their journey here. I feel sorry for the person who lost them, as I am sure that they are very disappointed at their disappearance. I am sure the celebration had to have been dampened by their loss.

Happy Birthday to whoever lost these four little ones!

  1. I was so relieved when I found out it was a balloon that lost its life! Here I thought it was going to be some kind of animal. 🙂

    • I was relieved and amused to find the balloons as well. I don’t know how they got there or from where. No missing balloon posters in the neighborhood!

  2. What a fun post!!!! You did a wonderful job of building suspense.

    • Thanks! It was fun.

  3. One of them looks a bit worse for the wear!

  4. Thanks! I was already bawling like a baby before I got to the punchline! 🙂

  5. What a lovely uplifting post:) Funny how small things can put a smile on your face. You write with such style and grace♥ I think you should start writing that book. I am at a lost for words regarding your sister. It’s heartbreaking reading how you feel, they say time is a great healer but that doesn’t take away the grief and pain does it(((hugs))) I’m Linda from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. I am originally from the UK and lived in Southern California for 9 years before moving downunder. I have a wordpress account but my blog is via blogger and I doubt whether any information would show up on wordpress so I thought I would introduce myself:) It’s winter here and we have perfect weather. More like an English summer:) It’s a different story come summer time when it’s soooooo hot. We would love to move somewhere cold, England perhaps? I have a gorgeous little granddaughter who will be 5 next March and we have a new little grandbaby due on 1/1/11. Sorry for the long post. I tend to ramble on:) Have a lovely weekend. Linda

    • Thank you so much! If you leave a link to your blog, I will check it out. I have always thought Australia would be a fun place to live. Granddaughters are wonderful, aren’t they?
